SPECIALIZED SERVICES FOR STUDENTS AND CHILDREN

Background

Increasing numbers of students and children require specialized services, during school and Early Childhood Services (ECS) program hours. Therefore, the Superintendent and Principal will work together with members of the community and community agencies to serve the needs of students and children who are “at risk” or who have special needs.

Procedures

1.In order to minimize duplication of effort and improve access for, and responsiveness to, children and families inneed, the Superintendent is committed to working together with other community agencies, organizations andassociations; other local School authorities, including operators of Early Childhood Services (ECS) programs; andregional authorities, including Alberta Health Services and Child and Family Services Authorities. Examples of”working together” include information-sharing procedures, sharing of staff facilities, and joint service planning anddelivery agreements (informal or formal).
2.To serve the needs of students and children in the School community, the Principal and, where appropriate, other staffmembers, will take an active role to initiate or participate in working together with other members of the community andcommunity agencies to improve services.
3.Procedures in working together with members of the community will be consistent with provincial policies andprocedures, including the Standards for Special Education.
4.In working with other agencies and external services providers, the Principal shall place a high priority on thestudent’s right to access educational services while at school. Unless absolutely necessary, external serviceproviders will be expected whenever possible to serve students outside of instructional hours. The principle isthat essential services should not compete for the student’s time to the detriment of the student.
