Administrative Procedure 252

CHALLENGES TO RESOURCE MATERIALS

Background

The Superintendent shall provide a process whereby concerned individuals or groups may register a complaint regarding any items included in the learning commons collection or used as a learning resource.

Procedures

1. The concerned party must file the request to review with the Principal on a “Challenge To A Resource Material” form available from the School, or the concerned party may explain in writing the concern(s) and reasons for the concern. It is most helpful to give specific examples.
1.1 Materials in question shall be evaluated with respect to:
1.1.1 Administrative Procedure 251 – Learning Commons Materials Selection.
1.1.2 Alberta Education Policy re: Controversial Issues in the Classroom (Guide to Education: ECS to Grade 12).
1.1.3 Existing community culture and values.
1.2 Care is to be taken to ensure that the materials in question are evaluated “in context” which means that some materials may be provocative and controversial for the purposes of teaching students how to think critically and to research alternative views and perspectives.
2. The decision of the Principal will be made after consultation with the learning commons committee, and a member of the School Council.
3. The Principal’s decision may be appealed to the Superintendent.
