LEARNING COMMONS SERVICES

Background

The Superintendent encourages the Principal to collaborate with local resources to establish a learning commons that enriches and supports the instructional program of the School. A learning commons shifts thinking from a library as a physical space, a repository of books, to an inclusive, flexible, learner-centred, physical and virtual space for collaboration, inquiry, imagination and play to expand and deepen learning. The learning commons area of the School promotes life-long learning skills that promote creative thinking, problem solving and the researching and evaluation of information obtained from any source.

Procedures

1. Learning commons services in the School involve the leadership of the Principal, teachers and support staff in partnership with the community library.
2. Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Principal will receive guidance in developing a school learning commons that supports creation, collaboration, inquiry, play and imagination.
3. The learning commons is to achieve or exceed the standards as outlined by Alberta Education.
4. Under the direction of the Principal, a budget allocation for the maintenance and continued improvement of learning commons resources will be established.
5. The Principal shall organize a learning commons committee to develop a plan for the learning commons in harmony with Administrative Procedure 251 – Learning Commons Materials Selection.
