BASIC INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM

Background

The Charter School curriculum will meet the requirements established by the Education Act, Ministerial order 028/2020 – Student Learning, and directives of the Ministry of Education. The provincial prescribed curriculum developed by the Ministry of Education forms the basic program of studies for students.

In addition, as permitted under the Education Act, the School may provide a number of locally developed courses designed to implement the Board’s charter and to allow the School to be responsive to the particular needs of its students.

The ultimate aim of all instruction will be the development of each student’s maximum ability to read well, write legibly, spell accurately, listen attentively, speak clearly, think critically, use basic mathematical computational skills, observe carefully, solve problems, participate effectively in groups, keep healthy, enjoy the creative and performing arts, participate in civic life, develop his/her unique leadership capacity and thus lay the foundation for a satisfying life.

Students at the school will benefit from the core curricular concepts being reinforced by experiential learning. As a result, students will achieve improved knowledge retention as well as a deeper understanding.

Students will grow a strong foundation of civic engagement and the continual pursuit of excellence in leadership which will support them in being responsible and successful members of society.

Procedures

1. Instructional programs are to be developed with the view toward creating a balanced, integrated, and carefully sequenced curriculum that will serve the educational needs of all students.
2. The Principal is authorized to approve instructional planning for the delivery of curriculum content in a multi-year cycle that accommodates multi-grade class configurations. Effectively, in a two grade combination, for example, instruction may include units of study from either grade with an intention to provide instruction in all the prescribed units of study for those grades, but over a two year period. This requires careful planning to ensure the cycle does not deprive the students of the opportunity for success in the intended learning outcomes for both grades over two years.
3. The Principal shall support the School staff in developing learning strategies that foster improved outcomes through continuous improvement, growth, stewardship and innovation.
These outcomes will be:
3.1. Students will recognize, understand and develop their unique leadership strengths at a level appropriate for their age group.
3.2. Students will demonstrate problem solving through adaptability, resilience, and critical thinking.
3.3. Students will understand the value of goals and outcomes.
3.4. Students will achieve academic success.
4. The School supports a reciprocal relationship with other educational jurisdictions, wherein locally developed curriculum
materials are shared.
