Protection of Students with Life Threating Allergies (Anaphylaxis)
Preamble
The Board believes that children/students with life-threatening allergies should feel safe and supported at school. A safe and caring school environment requires parents, students, staff and healthcare providers to work together in reducing risk while being ready to respond in an emergency. The Board supports a focus on risk reduction while also maintaining readiness for an emergency response to support students with life-threatening allergies.
Parents and students are responsible for providing the School with information at the time of registration regarding life-threatening allergies and for supplying the medication required for use at school if needed.
The School will:
1. Reduce risk of exposure to causative agents;
2. Provide information as needed on life-threatening allergies to parents, students and staff;
3. Establish a readily accessible emergency procedure;
4. Provide information regarding, and storage for, epinephrine auto-injectors;and
5. Mandatory training on dealing with anaphylaxis for all staff which includes:
a. procedures for appropriate storage and accessibility of epinephrine auto-injectors for students who have identified anaphylactic allergy
b. procedures for monitoring expiry and replacement of the school’s emergency epinephrine auto injector(s)
c. procedures for maintaining information in a file for every student who has an anaphylactic allergy.
