Administrative Procedure 142
CITIZENSHIP IN A DIGITAL AGE
Background
The School supports anywhere/anytime learning opportunities through digital tools. Staff and students are expected to be connected, digitally responsible citizens. The School supports and safeguard students as they develop online safety skills and learn to be good digital citizens in an environment that is safe, but that gradually broadens their experience. In collaboration with students and parents, the School establishes guidelines for appropriate use of the internet through digital citizenship and the appropriate filter level for the school. Digital citizenship is part of creating and maintaining a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe environment for everyone in the school community.
Digital Citizenship
Digital Citizenship is about having the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to demonstrate responsible and respectful behaviour when using technology or participating in digital environments. Digital citizenship is key to helping students learn to use available technology responsibly to enable them to reach their full potential as learners. A responsible digital citizen has the skills and habits that promote safe, positive interactions with others in the digital world.
Digital Citizenship Competencies to guide instruction include: respectful, informed, involved, balanced, safe and responsible use.
At VCS, responsible digital citizenship is consistent with the existing Administrative Procedure 140 – Information Technology Use, Administrative Procedure 140 Appendix – Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement, Administrative Procedure 142 – Citizenship in a Digital Age, Administrative Procedure 145 – Use of Personal Owned Devices, and Administrative Procedure 350 – Student Conduct.
