AT HOME LEARNING
Background
The Division will provide at-home learning for students when circumstances necessitate such action.
Definition
At-home learning means teacher-directed education programming provided by a Board to a student on a temporary basis at
the student’s residence or at a location other than the student’s regularly attended school.
Procedures
The Superintendent will:
1. Strictly limit the at-home learning option for students.
2. Ensure an in-person learning option is available for all students in grades 1-9 if temporary shifts to at-home learning
within the Division occur.
2.1. Exemptions to this requirement may occur for a period of up to three days through a notification to the Minister of
Education by the Superintendent.
2.2. An exemption for a period of more than three days may occur on a request to the Minister by the Superintendent
and a subsequent Ministerial Order.
3. Make reasonable efforts to enable each student to continue with the same courses and education program the student is
enrolled in as of the date at-home learning begins.
4. Factors that will be considered when deciding if learning should be in-person or at-home or a combination of both include
situations where the school building is compromised and not safe for occupation, equitable access to learning for all
students, access to technology, types of programming being offered, availability of synchronous or asynchronous online
learning and impact on the achievement and well-being of students.
5. Opportunities for continuing in-person learning at building other than Valhalla Community School, such as community
halls will be considered.
6. The Superintendent will ensure structures and systems and in place to provide at-home learning while fulfilling the
Board’s obligations under the Education Act and the regulations. This includes but is not limited to considering how the
board will ensure the minimum hours of instruction are met, set policies for student attendance during at-home learning,
ensure access and support for students to participate in provincial assessments, and oversee student supervision and
evaluation.
7. Students that require individualized or specialized supports and services will be provided such accommodations and
supports as per Administrative Procedure 211: Inclusion and Administrative Procedure 240 Specialized Services for
Students and Children.
8. The Superintendent will make reasonable efforts to enable students to participate in at-home learning by providing
access to technology when required and listing facilities with internet access.
